Our line of Eby's most likely began their American adventure in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in the early 1700's. (Note-August 2010-finally found the connection to Theodorus Eby, our first Eby ancestor in America)
At a time when the country was being called to arms, our ancestor's beliefs and church association did not allow any violence or arming of themselves, so they migrated to Charleston, Virginia. My great-great grandfather, Emanuel Grubbe Eby, was born in Virginia in 1830. In the mid 1800's, E. G. Eby's family moved on to Springfield, Ohio. Emanuel married Sophia Mirandy Remington Peet, also of Springfield, Ohio. Emanuel worked as a harness maker. While in Ohio, their three children were born, including my great-grandfather, E. K. Eby. The family eventually moved west again to Three Oaks, Michigan. E.K. Eby went to work for the railroad as a telegrapher. In Indian River, Michigan, E.K. met a young waitress, Margaret Cowley, working in her uncle's hotel. He eventually won her heart, they were married, and they began their family. E.K. was a bit of a wanderlust, and moved his family around Michigan and Arkansas quite a lot. Margaret eventually put her foot down and talked him into heading to California where her older brother had gone. They settled in Fresno, California, where they remained the rest of their lives. Margaret blessed us all with a memoir of her life that she wrote in the 1940's called From Out the Past. If anyone would like a bound copy of her memoirs, you may contact me at bonniekgorman@comcast.net. , or you can read it online by clicking on the title.
