Family Military Page
Our family has proudly served in the U.S. military throughout America's history beginning with the Revolutionary War. If you have photos or stories you would like to share, please contact me at bonniekgorman@comcast.net. It would be great to list every family member that has served, below are the names of the persons I could confirm. A * following a name indicates my own direct ancestor. Many men of our family were in the 37th Infantry Regiment Iowa
This regiment was known as the "Graybeard regiment". It was composed of men who had already sent their sons and grandsons to the war. They were all over 45 years of age-some over 60. A special order was issued to grant permission to this group of men. They were to serve only in guard and garrison duty. They mustered in on Dec. 15, 1862. They mustered out on May 24, 1865. They saw battle once, killing 3, wounding 2, and 145 died from disease. The names of the men I know of are (ages listed are at the time of mustering in):
William P. Severs*-age 46
George W. Kincaid-age 50
